I miss the good old days when cds were coded with letters to tell you how they were recorded, mixed, and mastered. I believe this was called the SPARS system and told whether the cd was "fully digital" or an analog-digital hybrid. Anyway lets list the full digital (DDD) rock cds out there. I'll start with a few:
    1) Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms
    2) Peter Gabriel - Security
    3) Donald Fagen - The Nightfly
    4) Bruce Springsteen - Tunnel of Love
    5) Linda Ronstadt - Cry Like a Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind
    6) Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Welcome to the Pleasuredome

    What are some others?

I don't miss the SPARS days at all, since 'DDD' became a way of marketing an album based on alleged quality, and many analog albums kicked them in the ass. [IMG]
I think The Poster Children had an album that was all digital. [IMG]

    Some more early DDDs:

    Marillion - Misplaced Childhood
Joe Jackson - Body And Soul
    Bob Dylan - Infidels

By the late 80s/90s, though, I'd think the majority of stuff was digital...

So I can know what cd's to avoid [IMG]
Metallica - And Justice For All. Digital. Great Album - horrible production and recording. They agree. Sounds like the band is behind a sheet of glass.
I'm not sure about Nightfly's digital status; I know that Donald hates digital.
What's interesting is that most outboard gear is digital (reverbs, delays, eq's, etc.) so many "analog" albums are actually more digital than you would believe.

Well, B'Boom is a live show taken directly from the mixing desk. I guess that means it's all digital, but I didn't realise we were counting live albums.

Btw, I wonder of ConstruKtion of Light is also digital?

One of the first rock/pop DDD discs I remember having was Heart's "Bad Animals" (1987). Brigade (1990) was DDD as well. I think I had a few others around then, though most of my discs were AAD or ADD.

At the other extreme, one of Aerosmith's discs (Get A Grip, from 1993 or so) was actually coded "AAA", all analog. I'm not quite sure how they did that, unless they took a digital copy of an analog master and pressed the CD from that.

Here are a few that I know of which haven't been listed yet:

    Judas Priest - Turbo
    Judas Priest - Priest Live
    White Zombie - La Sexorcisto

Supposedly, Queensryche - Empire is also fully digital but it doesn't say so specifically.

Depeche Mode - Music for the Masses. Although, the follow-up, Violator, was analog recorded and mixed.

I'm pretty sure that Alan Parsons Project's Eye in the Sky was all digital (and the 3 following albums, too). The LP (and later CD) liner notes stated that it was recored on Sony's PCM-1610 machines.

I knew that there wasn't as many titles as one might think. I think I read somewhere years ago that because of the extensive multiple tracks in most rock/pop songs that many engineers shy away from digital recorders because of the cost.
While I don't think that a full digital cd ensures a superior product, I do think that with the proper engineering a DDD disc can achieve more of the format's potential. In fact this disclaimer can be found on many of the older cds:

"The music on this compact disc was originally recorded on analog equipment. We have attempted to preserve, as closely as possible, the sound of the original recording. Because of it's high resolution; however, the compact disc can reveal limitations of the source tape."

It has always been a bit irritating to me to hear the analog master tape hiss on some cds, conversely I enjoy the emergence of music from the virtually silent background you get from a well recorded/engineered full digital disc.
