I may need to get out to Los Angeles next week on a minute's notice.

Looking at ORBITZ, I was able to price a flight, hotel and car rental
for hundreds less than what I would have expected to pay.

Is there a catch?!

Are these travel package sites everything they are cracked up
to be, and, can I expect when I arrive my car and hotel will be
waiting?

Thanks in advance!

Used them last November for an L.A. visit. Flight (from San Antone), hotel and car for one week...$700.00.
Could not have been happier.

How does a person make travel arrangements without Orbitz? ;)

I've been using Orbitz and such sites for at least five years for all my travel arrangements and they deliver -- no catch. I've used Travelocity last-minute-deals a few times to get flight and car rental with total success.

the online sites are great IF:
you never have to make changes to your schedule. If you have to make changes you are essentially screwed (in most circumstances).

Last year, I decided at the last minute (a day or two before) to fly outta town on some holiday weekend. I was to stay with a friend. The best deal I found was a flight + hotel package, which (hear this) was more affordable than any flight-only option from the same or any such website. Weird eh? This was on travelocity, but I have no doubt other sites offer similar deals.

I took the package, just never checked in at the hotel.

I've used orbitz about 3 times, many times for multileg flights and I find them very good. However, that doesn't mean I don't check every other trip thing out there, expedia, kayak, travelocity. A bunch of times, I will simply use Orbitz and then book directly with the airline finding the same flight, you find it's about $5-$10 cheaper too doing that but of course, may not be a "package deal". Of course, since I fly many multi-leg flights, you wont find many package deals anyway.
