Ok, I have Denon 3802 functioning as pre/pro. Would a dedicated pre/pro would make big sonic difference compared to a receiver?

    hi yoon,

in one word: yes. IMO the pre amp section has way more influence to the sound then a separate power amp. of course a good power amp can also make a big difference but not the way like a good pre amp.

    regards, holger

With that list I would say YES a good pre/pro will make a good change as you have good power/speakers/source already.

I have a 3802 and it is a pretty good at pre/pro duties. It does not compare to my adcom though as a 2-channel pre-amp. Never hurts to try before you buy!

What are you trying to improve? Music or movies?

Definitely. The Denon 3802, while a capable receiver at its price point, can in no way compare to a separate prepro. I remember auditioning the Denon 3801, wanting to use it as a prepro. The dealer had it connected to an ATI 1505 amp, and I thought it sounded pretty good and clear, but then he switched to a cheap Parasound AVP1800 prepro, and the sound just came alive with better imaging and wider, more 3D soundstage. Of course, without doing a direct comparison I'd probably be pretty satisfied with the 3801.

John, music. For movies, I'm cool with what I'm already getting. BTW what're popular choices? I know Rotel 1066 is, but I don't feel comfortable spending more on pre/pro than on my power amp.

I do not understand why a capable receiver like a Denon 3802/4802 in a pre-pro config would suffer compared to say a Rotel 1066.

It doesn't make much sense. In analog thru I would say yes but pure EX/ES decoding?

Many things in hifi/audio/HT don't make a lot of sense, they just happen. Go listen for yourself, and see if its different/better.

If you hang around this site you will find that a
lot of people think that receivers such as the denon
3802 make very good pre/pros because they usually
offer equal sound quality and more features and
    options for the money .

The amp section of receivers is the most often criticized, the preamp section is imo as good if not better then separates in the same price range.
