I'm hitting the home stretch on a starter HT setup for a small room (12X14)

So far I've done:

Onkyo TX-SR608 ($399)

Def Tech Promonitor 800 for FL and FR ($260)

Def Tech Procenter 1000 for center ($200)

JAMO c400 surrounds for the rears ($60)

I'm trying to keep the whole system around $1000. Vanns has some entry level Polk's for around 80, which would accomplish the $1000 goal, but am I better off spending a little more and getting, for example, A Dayton or BIC for 150 or so, A Mirage Prestiege s8 for 194 (vann's clearance), or spending even a little more than that and getting the matching Prosub 800? (250 on ebay)

The sub is one of most important speakers in your system. The sub has the hardest job of producing bass. I would spend more on the sub and less on the speakers (and even less on the AVR).

This is what "I" would do with a $1000 budget.

For the speakers, I suggest my favorite "cheap" speakers from Fluance:

http://www.fluance.com/fluan5speaks.html - $300

I had these a few years ago and, while they will not be mistaken for my current Axioms, at nearly $2200 cheaper they still sounded pretty good.

You can get the Onkyo 508 for less than $300.

Then spend the rest on a really good sub. Check this one out from SVS:

http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-box-10nsd.cfm - $475

This will put you just a little over your $1k budget.

Again, my opinion. YMMV.

Good luck.

I would suggest getting what you have already identified and save up for a better sub in a future purchase. As mentioned, a low-end SVS would be a good value to add. No reason you have to get all the speakers at one time. Especially, if you are constrained with current funds. In the long run you will be happier with the setup and not wanting to upgrade as quickly.
