No this is not a racist thread. My sister has to do a report on them because she's studying the Civil War era. I tried to find stuff on their history on the internet, and all I could come up with is pro-KKK stuff. I'm definately anti-KKK and against any racist groups. I definately don't want her looking at those sites. She's only 11 and don't need to be subjected to narrow minded stuff like that.

So how would I go about finding info for her report? Encyclopedias and stuff really don't help much. Too bad they don't have that show about the KKK history from the History Channel or whatever coming on soon so she could get info from that. Not an easy subject to research, especially for a 11 year old in 5th grade.

What search engine and search are you using? I just entered, "Ku Klux Klan History" at Google.com and got several pages of legitimate links on the subject, not a pro-Klan site in the bunch. You might also check biographical articles on "Nathan Bedford Forrest", the former Confederate General who organized the original Klan, then tried to disband it when local Klans became too violent and lawless for even his tastes. Not only should these articles provide basic information on the origins of the Klan, most should also provide links to more detailed information on the group itself, all from scholarly or journalistic sources.

Regards,

Joe

I believe they have their own website. As a bit of a conspriacy theorist, I personally would not visit those types of websites from my personal computer.

Tell your sister to watch Birth of a Nation. The "nation" being born is the KKK. It will show her how people once had the attitude that the KKK was a positive moral force. Although many 11 year olds won't want to see a 3 hour silent film.....

Depending on where you are in NH, you should have at least a few public or academic libraries nearby that would almost certainly have several books on the Klan. You can search the holdings of most of NH's libraries online.

We learned about the rise of the Klan in History 112. If you can find the text book:

Gary Nash, Julie Jeffrey & others, The American People, 5/e, v.2

you should be good. In fact, if you live near a college or a college bookstore, check out the U.S. history text books.

Chuck's is a great suggestion to look up school history books, - borrow those available from your High School peers on US History. Look into the reconstruction area and clashes between the Republican and Democratic parties around 1860's to 1870's.

Interestingly enough, (contrary to popular beliefs as to which party has traditionally been more 'liberal' in support of equal rights).

Radical Republicans passed the Fifteenth Amendment into law in 1870, and in 1868 when Grant was elected President, the Ku Klux Klan formed at this time as a backlash. Their goal was to destroy the Republican party in the South.

They were considered the (History book quote, not mine) "terrorist arm of the Democratic Party...calling reconstruction policies unconstitutional, revolutionary, and void..it (Democratic platform) demanded the abolition of the Freedmen's Bureau." Because Republican leaders and voters were being attacked and murdered, in every county where the KKK was active, Republicans began staying away from the polls, and slowly lost coalition and power in the South, reconstuction was dead in the South by 1876.

Look to party policy's during this era, there will be many mentions which are cross-referenced to the KKK. Try these search words: Freedman's Bureau, Reconstruction. Ulysses S. Grant, Joseph Rainey (a black S Carolina Congressman who received countless death threats from the Klan)Mississippi Plan.

When do you need the info by? I’m in American History (Junior in High School) and have a Text Book which has some info on the Klan. If you want, I can type it up for you.

It's for my sister. She has a while to do it. I'll have to ask her tomorrow when it's due because she's in bed right now. Thanks everyone for responding. I'll have to show her all the info and stuff.
