How do I disable SVM on my Sharp TV (1 Viewer)

It's a 27 inch Sharp CU27FS51. My DVDs (and sometimes cable) looks awful. This was mentioned in another thread. Edges look excessively bright (and multicoloured). I think it's caused by SVM or VMS (Scan Velocity Modulation).Unfortunately, I don't have a sharp service manual so I have no idea how to enter the service menu or use it to turn of this 'feature'.

I just got this TV and it's the only 27 inch flat model that fits into my wall unit. The Panasonic 'Tau' model was slightly too wide but it doesn't have this issue. I'm strongly considering returning this TV and getting a Panasonic 'curved' 27-inch CRT. This dge shimmering is just too distracting.

I'm looking for a 'soft' solution, there's no way in hell that I'm going to open up the TV set, my life isn't worth this.

I have the same problem with my 32 inch Sharp Flat Screen. I had a tech guy out today and he said it was a convergence issue. Could not fix it on site. I have a bad moire effect, especially on anything with tight or small horizontal lines that have contrast. This happens on Cable and DVD's. Also, any small white type is unreadable, like what is on some of the tests done with the THX Optimizer on the Star Wars DVD (on the bottom of the screen). Also the white boxes in the THX Optimizer had a slight red tint on the right hand side. I do have sharpness turned all the way down on the TV and the DVD player.

The tech was authorized by Sharp but he did not know the service menu for this product and by just looking at the TV and not bringing it in for full service, he thinks the SVM was not the cause and there is no way to turn it off or down.

The tech did say something about flat screens that you might want to try. Put it on a different wall facing another direction, north or south, whatever. I can't remember what he called this. The Panasonics don't have this problem of facing another direction, they self correct, or something like that. I don't know. Maybe someone else can shed more light on this.

I have contacted Sharp and you should do the same.

I am within 30 days of buying this TV so I will be taking it back this week to Best Buy, and I will not get another Sharp TV. I don't want to get burned again and it is too much of a pain to bring it back if it is bad. Seems like Sharp has a problem with there Flat Screens. Mine was Manufactured in Feb. of this year.

Thanks Pat, if what you said is true, that it can't be fixed, then I'm going to have to downgrade to a normal CRT. All the flat ones are too wide (except for the Sharp). Screw Sharp, that's the last time they try to steal my money, no wonder they have rebates for this TV line. They must have known about this glaring issue and sold the TV anyway. I'm thinking now that if it was fixable they would tell their service people how to fix it.

hmm, moire effect, so that's what it's called. I have that issue too. I also have the bleeding red issue in the THX optimizer menu, what a crappy TV.

As for placing it on a different wall, I doubt that would work, every sharp flat-screen I've looked at, since I bought my TV, has this issue, I doubt putting it against a different wall will help.

I don't know how your TV is but mine also has sharp contrast on peoples faces, the Left side mostly. Curious, in the THX setup, do you have the rainbow effect on one of the screens where it shows you a bunch of tight horizontal lines? Also when it shows the circle with the box, does it have bright red edges on some of it instead of white? The type on the bottom of that screen is unreadable to me also. I am trying to make sure it is not my Pioneer DV-45a that is giving the TV fits also.
