How bad and how frequent is the flicker bug on the RP56?

I'm still looking into the Panasonic RP56 as my new DVD player, but have been haunted by the idea of it having a flicker bug. How bad is this bug and does it show up often? (Also, in what movies have you noticed it?)

I own a 56 and to my knowledge have never seen it. But, I've never had it demonstrated for me either. I have seen it comb a few times but not very often at all.

Chroma bug does not exist in this player, but I HAVE seen chroma on some other players, and would have to say that in my case, I've found chroma to be more prevalent, obvious, and distracting.

I've never figured out exactly what the "flicker bug" is. I've got an RP56 hooked to a Hitachi 43UWX10b and have never seen any kind of flickering. Maybe someone can give an example and a DVD that this occurs on.

It only happens on artifical chroma edges like those found on Toy Story.

Look at the toybox lid in Toy Story in the scene in which Woody is making a speech. In certain of the shots, the lid will pulse. Personally, I rate this as a very minor problem.

    Daniel,

I gave the RP56 a chance back 6+ months ago.
I was very disappointed in this player.
The flicker bug to me is more annoying than the chroma bug.
The pulsating of bright colors at times was very distracting to me.

I calibrated to Avia on my Mits 55807 HD display.
I had my own lil shootout against the comparable budget prog-scan player at that time by JVC & Toshiba.
I felt the Pani's build quality & features were lacking compared to the JVC & Tosh.
I was also disappointed in the Pani's audio/video quality compared to the others.
    Great deinterlacer, but lacked otherwise.
I also found the audio quality lacking, connected to an Outlaw 1050 using an optical connector.

A lot of people love the Pani which has me wondering if it just doesn't match up well with the Mits display.

What type of display are you using?

Anyway do a search here for reviews of this player.

Try before you buy if possible, or have the option to return would be my advise.

    Daniel,

I also agree with Todd on this. I have owned both the RP56 and the Denon 1600, both had the same degree of flicker. I found the flicker to be very distracting. I used both players with a 57" Toshiba, so I don't believe it's isolated to a certain TV manufactures. It's probably just more noticeable on larger displays. As Todd said, always buy with the option to return.

Hmmm... I put in TS2 and I'm not seeing what you're talking about. Guess I should just be happy about it and move on! Perhaps my RP56/43UWX10B setup de-emphasizes the flicker since the Hitachi is scaling to 540p.

I think the RP56 matches up well with my Mits 55807. Although my set hasn't been professionally calibrated, I did add the "mini-gold" red-push attenuator and performed the AVIA color checks and the flicker is greatly reduced and only noticable when I am making a point to look for it. It never catches my eye during normal relaxed viewing.

    Ralph,

Where did you get your mini-gold red push attenuator?

    Phil,
I bought it in the Yard Sale on the HT Spot. You can get them by emailing Robert Yerrington at [email protected] I believe they are $30 each or two for $50. Possibly $35 each and two for $60. Something like that. Well worth it in my opinion. He's really busy and sometimes hard to get in touch with, but he's a great guy. Keep in touch with him and he will get back to you eventually.
