Going to Florida in a month or so and wondered if anyone knew of a few good places to stay in Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Daytona, or something within an hour of these?

I see quite a few hotels on the beach that might be good finds, but also might be rat traps. I do hate to take a chance away from a decent chain and realize you generally get what you pay for. But I have gotten lucky a few times in other areas with decent prices and better than expected amenities. Just thought I would check here to see if anyone has seen or stayed at a small (inexpensive) hotel in this area.

Any no-name places anyone could recommend. The only real absolute is I have to have oceanfront with a oceanview from the room and/or balcony.

    Got any? Thanks!

I think you are right about the "you get what you pay for" part. We've stayed on oceanfront cheap hotels but the experience is never the same. You have to dish out some dough for the nice sky high locations. Pricey but this is what you get:

Westin in Miami this passed weekend:

$170/night ocean view room w/military discount:

    And the $150/night room view:

If you are staying for a full week and are budget-conscious you can do what we did; stay the first part of the week at a cheaper vacation resort several miles inland, and splurge the last 2 nights at a nice oceanfront hotel. [IMG]

As stated, I certainly respect the idea behind you get what you pay for - hotels included. However, I do know that everytime I go to a new town there are pretty nice looking places that were a lot cheaper than what I paid - Under the radar and not mainstream. Either a small motel or B&B looking establishment.

I am one that will spend very little time in the room, but will stay on the balcony or beach for a large portion of the trip. As long as the room is clean and well kept, I don't really care.

Thanks for the pics. Makes me ready to go. Any other ideas?
