Let's face it... horror movies as a whole just haven't been large box office draws for many years. Action/Adventure movies are in these days but how many car chases and building explosions can someone film over and over before they too fall towards the wayside?

My question... there have been several new mainstream horror flicks out within the past 2-years. What ones would you recommend that are not "cult" status, comedy, or absolutely boring?

May is a good one, although, that may qualify as "cult." The Devil's Backbone is another great one, along with The Others, 28 Days Later, Audition, Below, Session 9, House of 1000 Corpses, and Donnie Darko (not a horror film, but generally marketed as one, and it's great!). A couple of good ones that aren't quite horror, but kinda border on it are Willard, One Hour Photo, Ginger Snaps, Dog Soldiers, Dagon, and The Mothman Prophecies. Hopefully those will get you started. I can't really think of any more recent ones that fit what you're asking for, but I'm sure someone else can. Enjoy!

Nice choices Jason, except I really didn't care for Dagon and haven't seen Mothman yet....
I recently saw The Eye and it is excellent, so is Ringu.
    I also liked Wrong Turn.

The best recent horror films released on DVD this year are (IMHO):

    28 Days Later
    Willard
    The Ring (and Ringu)
    Wrong Turn
    Signs
    May
    Final Destination 2

In what sense are Willard, Ginger Snaps and Dagon "not quite horror"? Has the word 'horror' become equated with 'slasher'? I mean, if a guy who kills people with rats, a bunch of werewolves and demon-worshipping fish-people don't fall into the horror category, what does?? [IMG]

I guess it really dpends on what you are looking for from a horror movie. My girlfriend will sit througha slasher pic no problem, but gets all antsy with movies like the Blair Witch Project the Ring and the Sixth Sense.

So the question is, are you looking for a suspenseful chiller or a gorefest?
