Watched Horizon -- Chapter 1 this afternoon. It took a while for me to get into its rhythms, but once I did, I found myself enjoying it with increasing enthusiasm. Is it a great Western? No, I wouldn't say that. But it's definitely one worth seeing.

One problem, however, was having two different sets of characters with the surname "Kittredge". First was the family from the Indian raid near the beginning of the film, with Frances (Sienna Miller). The second was in the wagon train, with Owen (Will Patton). I kept trying to work out how they were connected, until I figured they must not be.

The wagon-train sequence reminded me a lot of (quite frankly better) 1883 series, with its bleak depiction of the hardships that befell people who tried this method of crossing the frontier.

I had the same reaction when I viewed Part 1. 1883 was a very entertaining series that did a fine job of depicting the arduous journey west. Obviously it had a much longer period of time to tell its story, but it delved into a lot of similar territory.

1883 was fantastic. Loved the series, particularly watching Sam Elliott. I am assuming you also watched 1923, which is equally as good. Looking forward to the next season.

I watched 1923 first, due to Harrison Ford's participation and then viewed 1883. Sam Elliot was terrific in that series and I also enjoyed the various cameos featured throughout 1883.

And yes, I am looking forward to the second (and I believe final) season of 1923.

They are related to the family -- extended family of the husband who died. I can't recall if it was a throwaway line in the film, or what though.

Why, oh why did I watch Chapter 1. I told myself not to watch it and wait for the entire story to be released. I'm a sucker for westerns, and Costner westerns, and caved. Now I am left wanting more, waiting to see the rest of the story, and this thing will never get finished... shame on me.

The second film is finished and so, it remains open to getting a release. The third film has some scenes shot but is mostly incomplete (shooting was abruptly halted), whereas the fourth film seems like it will not get made. Last I heard, Costner was still searching for partners to go in on finishing 3 & 4 but was not getting much interest.

The problem is that the second film does not wrap up the story. It just leads into chapter 3. My guess would be that the momentum was meant to build into the final two films. So, 1 & 2 serve as a very long prologue. I think best case now is that he could rework the third film so that it becomes the grand finale to the project. Combine what was in 3 & 4 into one action packed ending. Won't be what he wanted but it could complete the story, just have no meandering in the third film.

Perhaps wishful thinking on my part but if he gets 2 released in some form and it gets some good attention, even as a streamer, maybe the third film could get funded. The lawsuits won't necessarily sink the project, they may make it more sensible to finish it to pay everybody off.

I don't think it will ever get finished in the way he originally envisioned it but I see no reason you could not rewrite and condense the final two films into one, sure maybe it would be a long nearly 4 hour finale, but it could be done and may have an audience on streaming.

He should sell it to Netflix, which might let him finish it.

This probably should have been a streaming project from the start, a 10-15 episode series, similar to 1883/1923.

Honestly, if Netflix has an offer, or some other streamer, that may be the last hope for it. I just don't think anybody will step up to make this for theatrical release.
