It seems some time ago someone posted a thread asking about what makes the dollar rise and fall in value and how it effects the economy.

Here is a recent Yahoo news article that I think explains the recent history, mechanics and pros/cons fairly well. Make sure to read the whole thing before discussing. As any news provider does, the article is front-loaded with bad news, and the good news is buried towards the end.

As someone who buys goods from Japan, this is not good.

The mechanics of the US exchange are quite simple in my experience. When I want to buy from the US, the US dollar is strong. When I want to sell in American dollars, it is weak. [IMG]

No, no, you've got it all wrong. When I have to buy Euros (with my US dollars) to pay for any large item...like rent...the dollar will be weak.

Economical impacts aside, I'm happy to see the Canuck-buck making a little headway. [IMG] As a Canadian who enjoys blowing money in Vegas... all I can say is YAY! [IMG]

Yeah, being in Canada it seems that prices are just dropping and dropping for all sorts of great stuff. It's nice. Especially considering my parents small business buys lots of product from the US. It's saving thousands of dollars.

Funny how American problems benifit Canadians.

Perhaps, but my parents business only sells locally, so it's not hurting us too much. At least, not directly.

It's pretty sad when the only way for Canadian products to compete in the market is because of a weak dollar.
