I am currently in the process of two DIY subs, and I was thinking of using my SVS 16-46pc+ as the lower end of the front mains. Do you think that I would run into trouble setting the fronts to "large" and supplying the 16-46 with a signal from both front left and right pre-outs from the receiver?

That should work ok. You'll have to use the crossover on the sub of course. Although i do know that on my receiver, anyway, the sub pre-out works in 2-channel mode just fine, and in s-direct it is full range, with no BM applied, so i still have to use the crossover on the sub, while the mains are still getting a full-range signal. This accomplishes the same thing, but allows you to send all the bass to the sub ONLY during movies without having to go switching wires around, and not stress your mains with tons of low bass and LFE.
