I got a computer from my father, it is actually used not new. When he had it, he cleared the HD and reinstalled windows. Everything worked fine. Now i brought it to my dorm and there is no sound? i double checked all the wires, any idea what could be wrong?

There are a few things you could check:

    1. Does the computer recognise your sound card still?
(see if it's still listed under device manager)
    2. Confirm that the volume controls are not turned down.

Are you getting no sound at all, not even computer sounds when you start Windows etc?

0k, now I hooked my PC up to my receiver so that I can play MP3s through my speakers. I get all sounds now, but I have the volume on the computer at maximun and playing through the receiver, it still sounds muffled a bit and I have to turn it up much higher than when I play a CD through my CD changer.

edit: There is also a slight "hum" through the speakers now
