Spend $5 and take the train to Shenzhen province (you'll need to buy a $20 visa one you arrive). Across the border lies the pirated goods capital of the world. Jeans, shoes, electronics, CDs, DVDs, belts, watches, purses, wallets, cosmetics, et cetera -- all cheaper than I've ever, ever seen them. Think DVDs for $2 USD; "Gucci" sunglasses for $3 USD. The fakes are also infinitely better quality than those seen anywhere except Korea.

Good luck getting the boots back through customs

It's against forum rules to inform where to get bootlegs

looking into getting to shenzhen,mike.

daniel are we talking an arm and a leg for lunch, because we are at the end of our trip and the funds are low, plus can't really beat the local hole in the wall restaurants, ambience not withstanding.but if it's affordable will do.

jeff i realize forum rules are strict about bootlegs,i am just asking for shopping "areas" or things of interest.and to be honest you can't avoid fakes here or anywhere else in asia except for tokyo from what i've seen in my travels over the years.they're more common than the real deal.

for anyone into gadgets asia can not be beat, they win hands down.tempations abound on every corner....

thanks for all the suggestions and warnings, keep'em coming.

Hehehe. The Penninsula is a lot of things ... affordable ain't one of them. Just classic British/colonial fair... Cucumber sandwiches, crumpets, several Rolls parked out front... Classic Hong Kong pre-Chinese takeover.
