I am a real novice and trying to to help my parents hook up their home theater. Since they live in another state, I need to try and assist them over the phone. I have identified the following connections that they have. They are only going to hook up a tv, hd box and home theater. What is the most efficient way to connect these three devices. Appreciate any help I can get.

They purchased a tv with the following:

2 component in
1 s videio in
1 composite in
1 dvi audio in
1 audio out
1 rgb audio in
1 rgb video in
1 rbg video out
1 dvi video in
subwoofer
external speaker
antenna

The HD box has

1 audio in
1 audio out
1 dvi out
1 componet
1 SPDIF Coaxil
1 s video
1 optical SPDIF
1 Composite in

The home theater in a box (with dvd) has

1 optical in
1 componet video out
s video out
video out
line out
aux
vcr audio in
tv audio in

Is the HD box the only thing they’ll be using for TV vewing? How will they be watching non-HD programming (i.e., getting the signal)?

Sorry if I was not clear - it is a HD cable box so they can get all other channels as well

Send component video out from the HTIB to a component video input on the TV.

Send a video signal from the HD box to another input on the TV, either S-video or component. You’ll have to use a separate input from what the HTIB will be using.

You didn’t mention if the optical connection on the HD box was an output. If it is, send that to the HTIB’s optical input.

If not, then they’ll have to be happy with the HD box’s analog audio outputs (the white and red L/R audio jacks). Send them to the HTIB’s VCR or TV audio in.

That should do it.
