Home Theater 5.1 around $1,000 help!! (1 Viewer)

Hello to all,
Maybe this has been posted before and answered,but please help if not. I have lived for years with Definitive BP 10 front floor standing speakers,matching definitive center channel speaker and matching rear channel definitive speakers with a subwoofer. I HATE the sound of these speakers for music.
I have a basement here in Wisconsin,and I don't know if that makes a difference in room settings,but in the basement I have an old pair of floor standing 35 year old Altec Lansing speakers that are amazing for music. The sound off these two speakers are so clear and direct.
I am powering the Definitives with a Sony, STR-DG 710. My question is are there a group of just 5.1 speakers around $1,000 that would sound more like my Altec Lansings for music, but would be adequate for movies also?

What do the "Defs" lack? Are they missing the bloated midbass punch that older speakers had? Have you plotted the frequency response of each set of speakers playing the same material and compared? Heck, you are willing to spend $1K when you can spend about $100 for a good mic, sound card and software. You may only need to make some minor adjustments to your current system rather than start over.
