Yep same here. I have a Sony S530D and I get the random subtitles. This is the first software related problem I have had with this player though...so I guess I am pretty lucky.

Well, crap. I've got the same problem on my SD3109. Here's my stats for what they're worth:
ROM1 Version V2.100 - R1
ROM2 Version V2.100
You can access this data on Toshibas by pressing zoom,6,0,6,zoom in stop mode. I think some players actually require there to be no discs in to do the firmware display, so if you try it and it doesn't work, make sure there's no discs loaded. Turn off the player and it will go away.
A similar problem is how I found the forum in the first place. Back in the day I got a refund from Toshiba on my 2109 because of the "Alien" firmware upgrade issue. I used the refund to buy a 3109, because I just had to have that "Blade Runner" Esper-esque zoom function. I guess my only consolation is that Sony players appear to be affected too. (Sorry Sony owners!)

Well, I got a call back from CTHE. They said mine was the second call they got on Wednesday. I think it might be a good idea to leave a message for them so they know how widespread the problem is (see above).

Thought I'd chime in on this...I have a 3109 (I have no idea about version or frimware). So far in my tests, the english subtitles are on when you start the film, but after turning them off once, they stay off unless I go back to menu and then into the film again. Oddly enough, everytime there is a chapter change, the subtitles do go back on, but they don't appear unless I access the subtitle button just to even LOOK at what's on. Then it goes on. However, if I ahve "on-screen displays" set to ON (things like "play" and "stop mode") this problems goes away totally.
I suggest Toshiba people try that to see if it makes it go away....it also might fix the problems that Toshiba owners have been having with Star Wars.

Report: this DVD is fine on my Panasonic RV31--nary a subtitle anywhere. I think that makes Panasonics 2 for 2, as there was a Panasonic earlier in the thread that worked fine with this disc.

I tried it on my SD-9000. No go. You know, it's highly likely that review copies circulated for a while before HG was released. Surely somebody at CTHE was aware of this problem.

I'm experiencing the same problem with my Toshiba SD-1600. It seems as if the subtitles want to turn themselves on at the beginning of every new chapter. It also looks like they default to the last subtitle toggled. For example the subtitles start of on the 1 English subtitle track. When the subtitles come on, you can turn them off by hitting the subtitle button twice, shifting it to the 2 French subtitle track. Then the next time the subtitles come on, they are in French. I highly doubt this information will lead to any sort of solution but just something I noticed while I was messing around with the disc.

I have the new Tosh 2710 player and it doesnt play the initial "Mønti Pythøn ik den Hølie Grãilen" subtitle. But I have no problem with other subs coming up that shouldn't. Other than that initial problem, the disk seems fine so far!

Scratch that...my player DOES have major problems. I thought I had fixed it, but it must have been a fluke or something. I watched the movie tonight and the english subtitles appear at regular intervals. They do NOT come on at the beginning of just chapters, they seem to turn themselves on a rnadom intervals. It is a truly annoying glitch, however, it is absent in my PS2.

It's obvious Toshiba players and some Sony's were not used to test this disc before release. Assuming they tested it at all.

Has anybody - like the forum administrators - who has contacts with Columbia Tristar heard anything from them?
With a defect as spectacular as this a recall would be in order, along with a program to replace discs for the many people who are stuck with them.
For retailers to continue to sell this disc without warning the public that many, many players are incompatible with it is simply dishonest.

Larry - to be fair, you should never attribute to dishonesty, that which can be attributed to simple incompetence.
If everyone who has problems with the disc will call CTHE, then they will know it is not a good idea to sweep this under the rug as an isolated incident.

Sure, it's a mistake - until the defect becomes known, which it definitely is. Best Buy and other companies will sell the disc, then refuse to refund your money because it's "opened." If they know it's incompatible with many players they should post a warning.

I have the same problem with my Toshiba 3109. When the subtitles start appearing I can temporarily get rid of them by switching to french or spanish. When they reappear I have to start switching again.I had to watch the feature with my remote in hand for the whole movie,

My JVC XV-523 doesn't do it, as far as I can tell (haven't watched the whole film yet, but watched the portions where people said they were having trouble).

You can add my player to the list--it's a Sony DVP-S660. The subtitles would pop up for just one line and then be gone again. I called customer service and left them a message to that effect.
