Anchor Bay will release in 2003 a DVD of the 1st laser disk that I purchased. I'll be really happy to have a DVd version of "Murder By Decree". My Magnetic Video LD can finally be retired. [IMG] [IMG] :p)

Hey, maybe we'll get doubly lucky and Columbia will issue A STUDY IN TERROR on DVD as well.

I've been waiting these two for years. I was hoping "From Hell" would spur some interest in Murder By Decree but I guess it didn't.

I meant that I thought the release of From Hell would get Anchor Bay to move the release date up instead of having to wait to 2003. Sorry about the confusion.

I'd love to have much sooner too! Waiting is such sweet pain. [IMG]

I had heard that FROM HELL's release on DVD was going to also prompt Fox to release a double feature disc of THE LODGER and HANGOVER SQUARE. Too bad that never happened, I'll have to stick to the VHS copies I taped from AMC.

I remain equally disappointed that Fox hasn't released THE LODGER and HANGOVER SQUARE on DVD as they alluded they would in conjunction with FROM HELL.

This is one of those films for which I think an isolated music score would be a great asset. The creepy yet beautiful orchestral score by Carl Zittrer was never commercially released. But I, too, am grateful that the P&S laser and video are being upgraded. Thanks, A.B.!

Glad to see that AB has finally provided the cover art. Murder By Decree ranks pretty high on my list of best Sherlock Holmes films, so this is a welcome release.

Interestingly enough, the AB disc may not be the only version of Murder By Decree to release to DVD in 2003. I was contacted by Critical Mass (Black Christmas DVD) a few months ago about their releasing a version for the Canadian and UK markets. Haven't heard anything further about this since August or September and have no idea if this will come to pass. If it does, the comparison should make for interesting viewing.

    Cheers!

No idea really. As I mentioned above, I have heard nothing further on this since September. I have however sent an email inquiry, so should I hear anything further on this topic, rest assured that I shall post my findings here.

    Best wishes,

    WOW!
I have never seen a Sherlock Holmes movie before and I want to get started.
    This movie sounds wonderful.
This thread has just sold me on buying the DVD.

JohnS after you purchase this one you should be on the lookout for a couple of other Holmes films which I believe will receive a release in 2003. The first two "original" Basil Rathbone- Holmes films "The Hound of the Baskervilles (1939)" & " The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes(1939)". Both of those have been available in the past on VHS.

    Hey thanks Jeff.
If I'm not mistaken, aren't there also a 3 or 4 DVD set of Sherlock Holmes movies out.
I believe Ebert talked about them on one of his previous shows, and he said that they were simply fantastic
isn't this called An Evening with Sherlock Holmes

No mistake about An Evening With Sherlock Homes being available, but I'd avoid it, as the image quality of the supposedly restored prints are utter rubbish. You are better off hunting down the Key Video vhs releases from the late 1980s as they are superior in every way. That being said, the bonus radio plays and the old Fox Movietone interview with Arthur Conan Doyle, nearly make up for the crap film transfers...nearly. Personally, I'd hold off from buying any of the currently available Rathbone Holmes films on DVD, as I expect at some point we will see decent and cleaned-up versions available. When exactly is anyone's guess, but sooner or later it is bound to happen.
    Cheers!
