Put me down for Hogan's Heroes too. As far as I know Bob Crane never forced anyone to do things against their will, so who cares about his private life? The guy was funny! (Don't put your faith in Auto Focus's objectivety. It was Ok'd by the son who didn't like him.)

The PC police need to chill too. Werner Klemperer (Colonel Klink) was a German Jew who's family fleed Germany during the war, Jon Banner (Sgt. Schultz) was an Austrian Jew who also fled, and Robert Clary (LeBeau) actually was interened in a concentration camp as a child. If they didn't have a problem with the show why should anyone else?

"It's weird to see Richard "Family Feud" Dawson actually acting instead of game-show hosting!"

Actually David L., it's weird to see Richard doing Family Feud and not playing tricks on Sgt. Schultz....

To paraphrase a line from AF: "who better to play a Nazi than a Jew?". I'm not 100% sure what that means (suspect it means that Jews know Nazis *very well*), but it's one of the IMO memorable lines from AF that "means something".

HH is my favorite U.S. comedy series from that time period, it's ridiculousness meshed well with that from Monty Python slightly later/overlapping...if you like ridiculous situation comedy as opposed to formulaic sitcom.

Hogan's Heros has been on DVD for about two years now. Its been available from Columbia House listed under their "TV Greats" section.

Reports a while back said the transfers were not that great. Plus, nobody ever commented on the sound.

As for season sets and 'stuff' like that - I donnot know.

Columbia House only did it at 4 shows at a time, so no thanks.

I thought it was interesting how there were two different secretaries with almost the same sounding name (Hilda was better looking though :)), and Kinch also got replaced with a similar looking actor.

And "Hilda" was Crane's real life wife at the time.

I will not see Auto Focus because I just don't want to be revolted. It doesn't affect my ability to enjoy HH, but whenever I see Crane on the Game Show Network appearing as himself on "Password" or "Tattletales" it's easier to get more aware of his darker persona. But what's really sick is how one of his son's has been selling some of his father's porno pictures to the public.

When watching TV shows and movies it is always best to separate the character from the actor or actress.

In real life the person may have personal problems, be a real jerk, shy, warm & funny, caring, recluce, party animal, druggie, non drinker/smoker, intelligent and wise, dumber than dirt, etc.

That should in no way come into consideration when judging a performance.

Look at Dustin Hoffman and Harrison Ford. In real life they're quite shy and reserved (even appearing very awkward in live, non-rehearsed situations-- although Hoffmann does usually have a very demanding/perfectionist presense on-set), rarely making the rounds in Hollywood unless they have to do promotional junkets, instead enjoying time alone with their families far away from Tinseltown and its trappings. On the screen they can be quite dynamic, charismatic, etc. depending on who they are portraying.

CH currently has a set in the DVD club that packages the first 20 episodes on 3 discs. I decided to get it since the effective cost to me was about $17 for the 20 episodes. I think I read somewhere that the I Love Lucy sets were a repackaging of the CH sets, so if they do the same for HH the following mini-review may be relevant.

Overall I'm quite pleased with the picture quality for a nearly 40 year old show. Given the age, I don't expect it to be perfect. There are occasional blemishes that appear to be scratches in the original film and some dark scenes seem a tad too dark to me, but without something to compare it to maybe that's just the way it was. For the most part though, the PQ is a pleasant surprise given the age of the source. The audio sounds fine to me. Again, my expectations are for it to sound like a TV show, not the latest cutting edge DTS soundtrack.

Each disc has either 6 or 7 episodes. Each episode has its own submenu that has a 'Production Notes' item and a 'Guest Cast' item. The Production Notes will have something like why a cast member left or was changed, or some anecdote about the specific episode or sometimes the series in general. The Guest Cast item will give info about a guest star's other appearances on the show and what else they might have done in their career.

One thing many of you will like is a 'Play All' item on the main menu. I found the Production Notes and Guest Cast items a surprisingly nice touch, especially since the set is coming from CH. My expectation was for the episodes only.

Cool. I like Hogan's Heroes. I used to watch the reruns a lot when it was on one of my local TV stations. I will be buying season 1 of Hogan's Heroes.

Based on other Paramount releases, does anyone have a guess at what a 30 episode season of HH would cost?

There's no real way to tell. They're all over the map. The first season of I Love Lucy is going for $107 on Amazon right now, while 39 episodes of the Honeymooners only cost $37. Then, an entire season of CSI--an hour-long show minus commercial time--costs under $70. So, who knows. I think I Love Lucy is sort of an anomaly, since it's a repackaging of all the single discs. It would probably have been lower if it had been conceived as a season set from the get-go. From that, I would guess HH would be closer to the Honeymooners price, but that's only a guess.

Before anyone says anything, I know you can probably find all of these sets cheaper online. I just went to Amazon for ballpark figures.

Thanks for the info Greg. The reason I asked is because CH has 18 episodes of Season 3 that I could get about $22-24.

Has there be any further word about this set yet? TVShows just did a big Paramount round-up, but they didn't mention Hogan's. I know there is still a lot of time left in the year, so it could still be coming.

Actually, the Greysmith book is full of inaccuracies. I worked on a documentary with Richard Dawson's son Mark on the case that's he currently shopping around, and did a lot of research in court papers and whatnot, it's a pretty interesting case to say the least.

It better be coming! This is the TV show I want the most on DVD! One of the local stations used to show HH but stopped some time ago.
