How can I get sound over heaphones and speakers at the same time in DD mode?

I'd like to have at least the center channel channel over the headphones, to help a hard of hearing person.

It seems on a 525 the speakers are shut off when headphones are plugged in.

Are the preouts all active when the speakers are on?

I tried using the center preout to another reciever but it's level is very very low.

How are preouts normally used ?
