Looking for a quality receiver, I was looking at Denon
3802 and 4802 but someone told me that HK8000 was a better buy.
Any opinions would be of great help.
    Thanks

Thats a no brainer HK 8000 all the way. It darn well should be too as it costs about 900.00 more then the very nice for the money denon 3802. HK 8000 has logic 7, better amps, more tweaks then the 3802.

Having owned the 4802 I can say that its an incredible unit for movies and music., but if I was buying one now I would go with the newer hk 8000 for the same price, as logic 7 for me would give the hk the edge

One of our members, Greg Hamilton, bought the 8000. He has recently been experiencing frustrating problems with the remote control. These issues may not have been resolved yet. If you do a search on HK 8000 you will find the post and should be able to find out from Greg if the remote issues have been resolved. Otherwise the 8000 looks great.

Problem with the remote notwithstanding, my vote is for the HK 8000. One thing to remember, however, is that it has only 5 amps. But, I would take it anyday. If you follow the discussion here you realize that it can apply logic 7 to 5.1 sources which, until now, was the domain of lexicon processors only.

    Howdy,

I decided to use the broken/horrible remote issue to buy the wonderful Marantz 5200 remote. While I was weeding through which remote to finally buy I received a suggestion from H/K on the remote issue for the 8000. I have not tried the fix.. but here it is:

I would suggest the following. remove the batteries and connect a jumper between the + and the - of 2 terminals. leave the remote like this for a few minutes. After that, I would insert the batteries and reprogram the remote to the factory default. To do this, press and hold the AVR and Mute buttons. then hit 0 0 1.

BTW - The 8000 is still impressing me the more I use it - sonically WOW.. For comparison, I previously owned a H/K 7000 which itself is no slouch. The 8000 is definitely throwing out more juice than the 7000 - bass ridden scenes are more detailed and cleaner.-gh

Does the 8000 share any amp internals with the 7000? I seem to remember my 7000 having parts that were labled "AVR-7000/8000" -or something to that effect.

This was taken off my old AVR7000. Some components were to be shared with the AVR9000 (still vaporware - and still talk of it coming out).
The written specs have been bumped up a bit:
    AVR7000 2x110, 5x100 & -/+ 75amps
    AVR8000 2x125, 5x110 & -/+ 85amps
Another interesting thing is the power consumption:
    AVR7000 125 idle & 1100 max (2 channels driven)
    AVR8000 119 idle & 694 max (2 channels driven)
I have not looked at the guts of the AVR8000 yet.. someday I'll get in there.. I know this doesn't answer your question, but try asking H/K support. -gh

Thanks for all the input, shure is helpful.

I still have one more question :b

Denon states a .05% THD while HK is higher at .07% should

I be concerned with those numbers if I go with HK ?

I personally don't read into the numbers game. Some ppl like to see these numbers though.

I actually got the chance to listen to the Denon 3802 today with paradigm studio speakers (at a local audio shop)and I can honestly say that I was not impressed. Now that could be an issue with any number of things not attributed to the Denon itself. I'm also not all that familiar with the Denon line.

Trust your ears is about all I can advise. -gh

The H/K sounds great with my Paradigms. But if you look any independent test you will see that H/K highly underrates thet Amps Heres one.

The above measurement shows that the AVR 7000's left amplifier channel, with two channels driving 8-ohm loads, began clipping at 0.008% distortion and 131.4 watts. The amp reaches 0.1% distortion at 151.5 watts and 1% distortion at 169.3 watts, as shown above. Into

4 ohms, the amplifier begins clipping at 161.3 watts and reaches 0.1% distortion at 236.0 watts and 1% distortion at 283.3 watts.

Got this from Hometheatermag.com under their arcives reciever and H/K 7000 on this reciever H/K only claimed 110 watts per channel in 2 channel stereo @.07 but in this test it achived 131.4 @.008.

    Greg, I'm so jealous.

I've got the AVR-7000 and the Pronto. I've been lusting after the AVR-8000 and Marantz RC5200 (or better yet, RC9200!). I just got this stuff about a year and a half ago, so the wife would kill me if I upgraded now!
