Your friend IS wrong, but a significant stat is the winning percentage of the '95 Indians. They won 100 out of 144 in the strike shortened season. What does that %age work out to over a full 162 game schedule? 113 wins (112.5 actually, but you can't win half a game).
Back in '98, when the Yankees were vying for that 114 win season, I remember the Indians 113 win projected season being brought up a fair bit. That may be what your friend remembers.

In 1980 and 1990 I bought the Baseball Encycolpedia and I am past due getting the 2000 version, but I may skip it and access the internet. The only downside, is the fun browsing the book and a bit quicker access.
