Wow, what a difference. What I found most interesting is how you can see individuals in the crowd, not just shapeless blobs. Colors are more vibrant, too. The difference is even more than the pictures show, which I took handholding my Coolpix 950.
    The tv is a 32XBR450.

Awesome captures, Erik. I love to look at the white guy (No. 42?) between the two Lakers. In the HD shot, he is clear and the color is vibrant...in the SD shot, he seems to almost disappear into the background. A truly eye-opening difference.

Great comparison. I e-mailed this link to some people to see for themselves.

Simply put, THE HD SUCKS! Yes, it sucks. They fricken cropped the 4X3 to fit the 16X9 aspect ratio for HD. Just look at the picture and you can see that they chopped off the top and bottom.

That's quite a difference! Back during the college football season we had one college game each week in HD from CBS at Sears. We have all of our HD's sittin next to each other and then the standards on risers behind them. We had OTA 480i up top, DISH 1080i on the bottom, suffice to say, we sold many an HDTV with such a good comparison setup between 480 and 1080.

The 480i photo looks MUCH better because it has no black bars![IMG]

    Nice pics, by the way...

Would you mind taking some more 1080i vs 480i pictures, this time on a tripod? Maybe The Tonight Show with Jay Leno? I'm not particularly a fan of his, but I know for sure his show is broadcast in HDTV.

What shutter speed are you using? I find that 1/20 sec. without flash works best for me.

Anyway, thanks again for the photos. I sure wish we had HDTV up here in Canada!

Check out the blonde in the audience. She is wearing a white low cut top in the center of the picture.

Of course she is only visible in the hd picture!

Thanks, Rutledge, now I may never see another BBall game again if I get HDTV. The crowd at the Staples Center tends to have women who are very...photogenic. [IMG]
