People say that if there was only one story - a universal template - everyone would be using it. Well they are.

And we're not talking 4 acts, plot points etc.

I mean that ALL succcessful screenplays use a very detailed version of the Hero's Journey that is based on Transformation.

Uhm, not all movies are about heroes. There are lots of movies about characters who don't change at all, or change for the worse, or get the stuffing kicked out of them by life. Think "Unforgiven" or "Seven."

I remember learning about the Hero Journey back in high school English, we used Field of Dreams as the basis for a thesis paper. I recall how much fun I had with it, to this day it's one of my favorite films...

Frequently a mediocre action pic becomes "great" with some of this 'character development' or "change" that Don refers to above, so I absolutely see how effective and widespread the model is employed...
