It's a long time since I've had to deal with anything DOS Windows 95 related so if you all could point me in the right direction here:

My girfriend's room mate has an old Pentium 2 200mhz W95 computer that has suddenly refused to boot up. I can get the F8 menu up, and when I do a line by line boot up it tells me the error:

Missing or Corrupted:
C:windowscommanddisplay.sys
error in your config.sys file on line 1:
country 353,437, C:windowscommandcountry.sys

Now is this a matter of reinstalling W95 to fix the above files? If so, do I do that from the DOS promt and what would I type to get it to access the W95 disc and start the reinstallation?

Plus, I was lucky in finding an old Windows 95 disc around the house, but god knows what the key code is for it. Is it useless unless I find the matching manual with the code on it?

For windows 95 you will need a boot disk if you want to reinstall. Do you have a boot disk? If so then just insert that disk, do an Fdisk on the drive, then Format and install windows 95 with the Cd you have.

With 95 and 98 you don't need the exact serial number... any 95 serial number will work.

Go to www.bootdisk.com and download one.

It might be worth finding the corrupted files on the CD and trying to copy them to the hard drive before wiping and reinstalling. Certainly worth a shot.

You can also boot from a floppy, and delete the Windows and Program Files directory while keeping all the important stuff intact, and just install the OS again.

Sorry bout not putting in a link for the boot disks.. Yeah, bootdisk.com will work, you can also d/l them right from MS' website as well, or you can even make your own off another PC.:)
