Hi everyone,

I am trying to build a home theater for my living room...I am on a little bit of a budget so I would like to get a speaker set that comes with the complete 5.1 or 7.1 in a box...I was leaning toward the Energy Take Classic 5.1 (recommendation from a member here) which Amazon has for $400 but I still would like to look around a bit more before I make my final choice...I was at 6th ave yesterday and the sales guy was showing off a KEF KHT1005.2GB 5.1 which they had on sale for $400..they sounded great in the showroom but I can't compare them to the Energy set because none of the stores carry them...finally I received a PC Richard ad today that had the Klipsch HD 300 5.1 system on sale for $250..I am going to try to swing by there tomorrow to see how they sound..I know this is tough but can you guys help me narrow down my choice between these options or maybe you have another recommendation.

As far as receivers go I am probably going to purchase the Pioneer VSX1020K or one of the lower end Elites.

I truly appreciate the help.

Listen to the Klipsch's long and hard. Some find their highs fatiguing after long listening sessions. Over the years, I've found that I like dome tweeters in my speakers.

How would you rate the Energy or KEF set in comparison? Also what do you mean when you say dome tweeters? Sorry I am new to this stuff.

Thanks again!

All perform the same function but they all have their own characteristic sound.

I have never listed to Energy or KEF before. Both are highly regarded though.

John,

You are doing the right thing to listen to speakers and pick the ones that sound best to your ears. It's impossible for any of us to tell you which speakers will sound best to your ears.

I don't think you will find any of those $400 Energy take 5's in stores. They appear to be a discontinued item from the Energy line up and Amazon and New Egg appear to have brought up the remaining stock. I listened to them when they were selling in the $700 range but can't compare them to the KEF. At $400 I would have to think they would seem to be quite a bargain in that price range. Also be aware that Energy is owned by Klipsch, but they did sound different than the Kilpsch speakers I listened to. I agree with Robert J assessment of Klipsch at first listening they are impressive but after a bit the highs became fatiguing. However, many folks like that kind of sound.
