I have a 3-1/2 yr old Sony CA70ES 5 disc CD player. It does not recognize CD's. (Tried different CD's in different bays of the changer.)

    1- Is this easily fixed?
2- If not, what comparable current model could I replace it with?

    Thanks
    Ken

Using different bays of the changer shouldn't affect it's ability to play CD's because it uses the same laser to read all discs, thus the rotating carousel. Try a laser lense cleaner and if that doesn't work you could take the unit apart yourself to clean the lense. I don't know of the appropriate material or solvent to use cleaning a plastic laser lense which is likely what the Sony uses.

Comparible or better units would be another Sony, Denon, or Onkyo. I personally prefer single disk CD players because of reliability and a better quality design. Carousels use more electronics than most single disk players and attension to quality is not usually as keen with carousels as they are more expensive to manufacture. Sony and other mass producers of electronics cut some corners making such players.
