Okay, some webpages load, some don't. I just installed Mozilla Firebird and all my webpages load with that browser, but using IE some pages (even HTF) don't load. Another problem is that I can't copy and paste folders, files, or anything. I get that Windows "ding" sound and nothing happens. If I try cutting and pasting a shortcut to my desktop, I get the same "ding" sound and nothing happens. I *really* don't want to have to re-install the OS. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I am having the same problem (can't copy paste files or folders) with Windows ME.

So the only way to fix this is to Re-install the OS?

I'm also having a few other problems.

First of all, the recycle bin icon on the desktop is always full. If I open the bin, it shows 0 objects. But if I select "Empty Recycle Bin", it asks "Are you sure you want to delete these 9 items?" If you select "Yes", then select "Empty Recycle Bin" again, it asks again "Are you sure you want to delete these 9 items?"

Second, the computer can no longer connect to the internet using AOL. It can connect to the local library using Hyperterminal, so the modem still seems to be working.

Any help or info that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Based on the descriptions of these programs, it sounds like they are just for detecting and removing "browser hijack" attempts.
Would a browser hijack cause the Recycle Bin to always have nine items no matter how many times it was emptied, or make it so I was unable to copy or move files in Windows Explorer?

I'm assuming you're not using system utilities like Norton Tools (or whatever it is called now...Semantic Tools? System Mechanic?). These "helpful" tool can sometimes really mess up your system. I had Norton Tools hijack my recycle bin in Windows 98 once...I had to reformat and reinstall windows to get rid of it. :frowning:

Your assumption is correct.

I have figured out a way to copy files until I get a chance to reformat the hard drive.

You put the file you want to move into a zip file, then extract it into the directory you want to move it to.

I tested this with 7-Zip and it worked.

okay, so my computer isn't exactly having the same problem that paul had with his, but i hate starting new threads that have a million other similar ones. so here's my problem: i have been running adaware and spy-bot to try to fix the often times insane situation with my computer right now. i noticed several weird subtle things at first(i.e. when i try to type in the search bar at first it types after the default message; there is no longer a "status bar" on the bottom of my browser that would let me hover over links and see what website it's taking me to, as well as showing me loading progress, etc.), but now the system is running slow(it might be because of the crappy connection in my apartment-but who knows), and the program "golden casino" is sporadically installed on my desktop after repeatedly uninstalling it.

oh yeah, and for a while the folder "system32" would also randomly come up on my screen. all of these problems have led me to believe that my computer is royally screwed. i ran that trend micro virus scanner and it found a file with a virus that i couldn't delete-these are its exact whereabouts in my poor computer:

c:\WINDOWSsystem32cazfumxw.dll

if anyone knows what i should do to remedy this whole fiasco, please let me know. thank you.
