The new Kodak commercials feature a weird folkish cover of "Why Can't We Be Friends." Anyone know who it is by, or is this another "It's getting better" fiasco.

Why was "Getting better" a fiasco? Almost all the artists who did that tune were identified on the Phillips marketing website. My personal fav was Gomez.

The "Why can't we be friends" song was originally recorded by War. I did a quick websearch and this seems to be a popular question... there are atleast 5 people asking on Usenet as well.

Maybe try an email to Kodak.

The song was recently covered by Smashmouth, too. I don't remember the commercial, so I can't say if it is that version or not. I would not describe it as folkish, so probably not.

I saw the commercial and can definitely say that it's not the Smashmouth version. No clue as to who the real artist is though...
