My uncle has called and asked me to help design a set-up but the problem is I prefer going the bigger the better approach (floor standing speakers huge subwoofer, loud, loud) but my uncle wants something more subdued. Money is not a problem but lets not go overboard, lets go 3 ways a $1200, $2500 and $5000 dollar set-up. He lives near Philly so any suggestions for good stores in the area and the internet is an option. Here are the requirements
    31-32 inch TV
Receiver with DD/DTS and Pro-logic 2 would be nice, A/B speakers
Speakers x5 small cubes to moderate book shelf size
Subwoofer lets not go to big with this one SVS will not work
    DVD player no specifics
Have fun and Thanks for your Help
    Todd

    Okay.
    1. TV. No idea but budget between $700 - $800 for this.
    2. Receiver. Onkyo TX-DS595. Denon AVR-2802. Yamaha RX-V620. Outlaw 1050 . All should run under $500.
    3. Speakers. Very subjective here. Ascend Acoustic CBM-170 package . HTD Level III package . nOrh 4.0 package . Paradigm. B&W. NHT. Klipsch. Swan Diva . Likely he will spend $750 - $1,600 on these.
    4. Sub. Usual suspects here. Adire Audio Rava . Paradigm PW-2200. SVS (even though you didn't want to hear that one). HSU VTF-2. Budget between $400 - $800 for one.
    5. DVD player. Should double as a cd player as well. Toshiba, Denon, Onkyo, Sony, and Panasonic should all be good. Probably will run $200 - $500.
You could build a stellar system for a good price. For a specific example, keep the tv at $800. Now, get the Ascend Acoustics CBM-170 package w/HSU VTF-2 sub ($1,100), Onkyo TX-DS595 receiver ($400), and finally the Panasonic RV-31 dvd player ($200). You have an excellent system for around $2,500. Substitute the nOrh 4.0 package ($850) and the SVS 20-39PC ($779) and it will run you $3,029. There are quite a few variables here. He could spend more on the TV or on the receiver. There is plenty of flexibility. Just take your time.

Heres my shot at the low end number, 1200 was not reasonable to include a TV, so I raised it to $1500:
    TV: Toshiba CZ32V61 -- $590, shipping/tax will be more http://electronics.cnet.com/cgi/CEPD...ts&pid=1001351
    Receiver: Kenwood VR-507 -- $260.00 shipped http://www.etronics.com/product.asp?stk_code=kenvr507
    Sub: Sony SA-WM40 -- $185 shipped http://www.etronics.com/product.asp?stk_code=SONSAWM40
    Speakers: JBL NSP1 -- $310 shipped http://www.etronics.com/product.asp?stk_code=JBLNSP1
    DVD: Pioneer DV-343 -- $167.00 shipped http://www.lgdsuperstore.com/dv343.html
    http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/Pi...22,602,00.html
    ---------------------------------------------------
Thats about $1512.00 not including shipping/tax on the TV
similar substitutes can be found on just about everything here for the same price.

    for the cheaper option again:
i second the JBL Northridge, but you can get them for $299 shipped from J&R right now.
the sony SA-WM40 is a great sub for the money. if you wanted more bass though, i'd step all the way up to the Adire RAVA ($399 +shipping) or the Hsu VTF-2 (~$450 shipped)
i dont know TVs, so i cant help you there. the receiver seems fine unless you want to step up to one with some moe power. then, i'd go with the Onkyo TX-DS575x. you can get one for about $310 shipped (from Onecall.com), but it's a b-stock if that matters. the new TX-DS595 is $359 +shipping from J&R (jandr.com). if you check there, see if they have the 575x. i'm not sure if they still carry b-stocks.
DVD player: i'd go with the Panasonic DVD-RV31 (~$175) or the DVDRP56 (~$225 at jandr.com). the '56 steps up to progressive scan and plays mp3 cds. (just in case you get a better TV.)
remember: you can ALWAYS talk the guys at J&R down especially if you're ready to order. the '56 is cheaper at onecall.com, but tell J&R this and they'll beat it.
good luck. wish i had an uncle like that!!! [IMG]
