Yes, that was the 1961 version of THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND, with stop-motion-animated monster animals courtesy of special effects master Ray Harryhausen. Strange that Columbia Tristar hasn't released it on DVD yet, since it's generally regarded as one of Harryhausen's very best films. By the way, the film's director, Cy Endfield, directed the classic movie ZULU a few years later.
