Ok
So I am down to these two choices

Samsung FP-T6374

Panasonic TH-58PZ700U

This will be going on a 60" stand for now maybe on the wall later
The wall is 8 feet long.

the panny will need a pedistal added in the purchase
I am about $1000 apart between the two 4k and 3k

The newest Samsungs have been reviewed to have highly accurate color, probably the best out of all the new plasmas but not that great black levels. The newest Panasonics have better blacks and still a pretty accurate color. The ultimate would be the Pioneer 60" plasma but you would need to get it from an obscure website like WildDigital.com - Pioneer*PDP-6010FD, 60-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV to match the price of the Samsung.

Greetings

If calibration is in your future ... the Samsung will calibrate easier than the panasonic. Chances are, the gamma response on the Samsung will also be better.

Just to chime in on the other side, I'll say I researched and reviewed plasmas to death when I bought my first one several years ago. A 50" Panasonic. It's been fantastic and I think they are making some of the finest plasmas on the market for the money.

I bought their 65" plasma a month ago and simply astounded with it. Go with Panasonic for the plasma. Michael may be right about the calibration though as he apparently has more experience with that area.

If it was one of the new Samsungs, I'd tell you to go for it, but in this case I recommend the 58PZ700U. Enjoy!

Thanks guys

But are the 2008 Samsungs a better choice?
I might be leaning towardt he panny, even though it is discontinued

I've had a chance to play with a Samsung 50A550 and Panasonic 50PZ80 in a fairly dim room, taking it out of torch-mode, etc... and they are both fantastic sets, it just depends on where your priorities lie.

Panasonic has awesome black level, but color reproduction is somewhat inaccurate. I noticed it leans toward the bluish/greenish end of the things, and the picture is somewhat noisy in any mode. However, these are minor.

Samsung has much more accurate (and warmer) color reproduction and seemed to produce a cleaner, maybe sharper picture (with enhancements off of course). Downside, the black level is noticeably lighter than the Panasonic. As bad as most LCD's? Not hardly, but not up to Panasonic and certainly not up to Pioneer standards.

Overall, I'd say I preferred the Samsung. Like Michael TLV said, the Samsung also has more tweaking options.

I have last years Panasonic TH-50PX75U and love it. Mine is a 720p set though. Their newest models have even better color and black levels than mine. I would have gotten the 58 inch model you are looking at but at the time I just couldn't justify the extra $1,000 in price difference.

Amazon has the TH-58PZ700U for about $2,950 now. As as far as I know it comes with the stand already.
