Its time for an upgrade from my 4 year old HP, I was thinking about maybe building me a new one this time. I'm going to use it for playing games mostly, and of course day to day surfing/average home user stuff. I will also probably use it for some light video editing. I have a 2.8ghz p4 sitting in a broken computer that got struck by lightning that i could use as a processor, although I was looking at AMD chips. Anyone got any suggestions?

Budget is anywhere from $500-$1000.

well if you gonna use it for gaming forget about the intel proc and get an athlon 64 an A64 3500 should be within your budget. slap it in an msi motherboard with 1 gig of ram and a Nvidia 6600GT or a x800gto2 and you would have one fine budget rig.make sure that the power supply you select is decent too.

I suggest reading this article;

should give you some basis for what you need.
