Our family room is open to the second floor of our home, and the sound from our tv escapes upstairs. In order to hear dialogue, we have to turn the sound up. Then, it is actually louder upstairs than in our family room. We are thinking speakers placed near our seating area may help. We do not want to sit around with headphones on. Btw, I am not very knowledgeable about home theater systems, surround systems, etc.

Sounds like you’re using the TV’s built-in speakers? Those things are absolutely pathetic, typically on the BACKSIDE of the TV firing up, or down, or whatever. I suggest getting a sound bar. It will sit below the TV screen and the speakers will fire straight ahead, at the listening position. What a concept! You should be able to get good dialog intelligibility then at a lower volume.

Thank you for your response. Yes, we are. The TV is mounted above our fireplace. We actually use our built- in buckstove, so we can’t move it down. Hardwood floors and a wall of windows make audio a nightmare. We will try a sound bar. Thanks again.
