Ok, here is the situation guys:

I have a Toshiba SD-1700 DVD player in my room. I haven't played a DVD in that player since Sept. 12. WELL: last night I put in Blade II and it started fine, but when I went to put in the DTS audio option it froze!

Try unplugging your DVD player for half an hour. I have to do this to mine roughly every six months for some reason because of the exact same problems. Mine's an older player though.

from the AC outlet.
Generally this allows the unit to revert to the factory default settings. >15 minutes usually works

If it is under warranty, it is most likely the optical unit (laser) that needs to be replaced. I have had one fallout on one of my previous players. The symptom in that case was pixelization (blockiness) when switching to layer 2 of a disk. It had trouble focusing on a dual layered disk.
