HELP CONNECTING SMART TV TO RECEIVER (1 Viewer)

Hi, I am a new member here and would appreciate any help anyone could offer. My problem is, I can't get audio from a new Vizio smart hdtv model m422iB1 to run through my existing older model Sony model STR DG800 receiver and out external speaker system. The receiver does have hdmi connections which I have used to connect a dvd player and connected to the tv. The tv does support ARC but not the reciever. I have tried using an optical cord from the tv to the receiver and I can get audio through the ex. speakers but only on cable tv. No audio from the dvd or any of the aps like netflix. Seems pretty basic but got me stumped.

You probably need to set the DVD player to 2.0 pcm.As for the apps. Lots of TV lock that audio inside. All ARC does is replace the Toslink.Regarding the DVD player. Why not connect it directly to the Sony?
