Been out of the TV and audio game for many years and came here to ask questions about a new setup I've purchased.

Welcome! What's your new setup?
LG C3 48" TV and region-free UB820 DVD player. Well, it was "new" back in August I started a discussion on this forum. But after spending many days and countless hours talking about soundbars, I ended up not buy one at all, opting to use the internal TV speakers instead. My wife and I don't like loud sounds anyway, and on top of that, we live in Japan where homes are very close to each other, prompting everyone to keep volumes low out of respect. Sure, the TV lacks bass, but it is what it is, and I am satisfied with it. I was tempted to get an Apple HomePod (or even a stereo pair), but I decided against it in the end for the same reasons I didn't buy a soundbar. Also, my TV sits on TV furniture. It's not on the wall, so there's not much room for speakers anyway. And I'm not interested in running wire across the floor to have speakers behind me. So again, I opted for the frugal approach of avoiding extra speakers altogether.

I highly recommend the UB820 "region free" player though. Not all are, mind you. I had to pay extra for that from a US seller. But it's worth it for the free to watch any content I like. Funny how I read news stories talk about the death of the BlueRay, even though nobody has a solution to replace them! Streaming isn't a solution because I have a lot on DVD and BlueRay that isn't streamed anywhere! Getting the same content on a USB thumbdrive would be great, but the rights owners hate that becaue they can't secure it adequately. But for now, I am enjoying my semi-new setup.
