I've been thinking about getting Heavy Metal and Heavy Metal 2000 and there is a boxed set available that has them both. There are also standalone discs available too. The standalone Heavy Metal is listed as a special edition but the version in the boxed set isn't listed as a special edition. Are they different versions?

I have the boxed set. It lists "special edition" on the front cover of the box. Inside, the Heavy Metal 2000 disk says "special edition" on the cover, and the Heavy Metal disk says "collector's series" on the cover. Hope this helps.

The separate discs are the same ones as in the two box set. Both are anamorphic and have plenty of extras.

HM 2000 was animated in hi-def, so the picture is flawless, though the plot, acting, and overall film are not.
