I'm back in Omaha for the holiday, and the skyline definitely looks weird without one of the towers there.

Apparently this is the third tower in Nebraska to fall in the last year, all of them being fitted with HDTV antennas. Veddy interesting.

There's a chance that the local NBC affiliate could have their tower fall as well (it was damaged in Friday's collapse), as it's already leaning near the top and we have very high winds forecast for tonight. We'll see...

There's HDTV antennas being installed all over the country, as TV stations are up against federal deadlines to start digital broadcasts, so it's natural that there will be an increase in the number of these accidents. It might be just a weird coincidence that there have been three in Nebraska.

If anyone is interested, there is an Omaha thread at AVS Forum where one of the engineers at the TV station had been giving daily updates with details on the tower work up until the collapse, but since then he's been too busy and probably at a loss for words. It's interesting to read about the procedure that had been underway.
