hello all,

silly question but where do you find out whether or not your tv upconverts or downconverts (or does neither) given a particular input? ie if you are watching 1080i image and your tv will diplay it at either 1080i or possibly downconvert the image to 720p?

or if you are watching 720p and it upconverts to 1080i for you?

Ken, only rarely do HD-capable displays render both 720p and 1080i. If your display does 1080i (as most do), it will convert 720p and display it as 1080i.

Jack,
I see that most LCD projection sets display at 720p,some at 788p, some at 1024. Is there a quality difference between 720p and my XBR's 1080i when viewing HDTV?

Some users report that 720p renders certain types of images better than 1080i. Qualitatively, on your direct-view Sony, images may appear sharper (due to smaller size) in 1080i than a larger LCD set rendering 720p. But it's the larger set that, inherently, is capable of resolving finer detail.

Theoretically, however, progressive scanning is superior to interlaced scanning, even at HD rates. But your XBR is no slouch, and every XBR I've seen has been nothing short of impressive.
