Does a rear projection HDTV have a lamp or tube? I have heard this needs to be replaced every 2-3 years. Can anyone educate me on this?

Lamps need to be replaced every 1000-5000 hrs or so on many fixed-pixel display devices (LCD, DLP, D-ILA.) The lamps cost from $150-$500 or so.

Most RPTVs are CRT (tube) based which, when calibrated correctly, you can expect to last ~10 years. There is rarely a point in replacing a tube, unless it's under warranty due to the high cost relative to a new RPTV.
