HDR Mode? (1 Viewer)

I was told to only turn on the HDR+ mode when viewing true HDR movies (say on Netflix). Don’t have it on for non HDR material. Then I read that the HDR mode upconverts a non HDR signal.
What’s the real answer?

I have a 2016 UHD Samsung. The HDR+ mode just gives non HDR material an increased contrast and extra color. I personally do not like it. The TV will automatically switch to the HDR mode when it detects a HDR signal.
