Hello folks,

I have a dilemma using a hdmi to dvi cable.

The equipment is coming from is a panasonic dvd/vhs combo with four different outputs (hdmi, s-video, component, rca)

The projection unit is an epson 7700p with five different inputs (s-video, dvi, component, vga, rca).

I bought online a hdmi to dvi cable converter.
The cable was plug from the dvd to the projector. However, I can't not see any movies or any image been display from the dvd player. The signal shows for less than a second and it disappears.

I attempted the same test to a different projector (toshiba). However, the video image is horrible. I prefer using s-video instead.

I contact epson manufacture and the technician ask me to test the epson dvi connection using a mac computer which it works just fine.

SO, what I have found until, my dvd player and epson do not get along using the hdmi to dvi cable. they will only talk using s-video, and or rca or component.

Do you have any idea if my cable is too cheap and this is why it will not work. Or, my dvd player is too cheap to talk to the epson 7700p.?

Thanks

Hello Pete,

Welcome to the forum.

The DCI-device needs to be HDCP-compliant (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection). This means it has to support that specific form of copy protection.

Probably, your projector isn't HDCP-compliant, in which case the player's HDMI circuit will refuse to make contact.

If this is the case, all you can do is use the S-Video connection. If, however your manual says the projector is HDCP-compliant, there must be another problem.

Did you try using the S-Video? Should work fine for BD.
There might be a problem, though, with SDVD: the player will not upconvert most of them over S-Video).

If you want to use HDMI, there is no player I know of, that will not "demand" HDCP.

Most of the current devices (including some computer monitors) having DVI, also support HDCP. It's stated specifically in the technical specs if they do.

But if you buy a new projector: why not take one (any) with an HDMI input: it will always support the HDCP of course.

It makes perfect sense what you have expained to me. And, S-Video does work between projector and dvd player. However, I'm wondering why stores are selling hdmi to dvi convertion if it will not work.

Crooks. ;)

Well, probably ignorance or they just don't care. When you buy one, they should tell you that the DVI device needs to be DHCP-compliant to work with the HDMI.

I have been using a DELL monitor for that purpose for several months (in my study). It works fine.

(BTW, in fact the HDMI connector is almost exactly the same as a DVI connector. Mostly the same leads, carrying exactly the same signals, just another logic attached to it.)
