Hello Forum, This is my first post and wanted to say Hi to begin with.

Forgive me if this has been answered before, but I did a quick search and with the vast results I got, I figured I would ask my question.

I am currently redoing my living room and with the finishing touches going up this week, I am now turning my attention to my theatre setup. i have wired my walls for 5.1 sound, and am getting ready to start looking at picking up new components. I currently have a Sony Rear Projection TV (pre-HDMi) but has a DVI input, and would really like to upgrade the TV last. I am looking at starting with a new receiver and speakers, but would really love the capability of HDMI switching for, Cable, XBOX, Blue Ray, etc, i.e. HDMI into the receiver, and a single DVI up to the TV? Would it be possible to get sound up to the TV speakers from the receiver?

Thanks in advance.

Chris

You can use an HDMI to DVI cable from Monoprice, Blue Jeans Cable or one of the other on-line sources that don't charge ransom money for a bit of wire and insulation. ;) That takes care of getting video to the TV. Depending on the exact make and model of the TV and Receiver, you may be able to get sound from your receiver to your TV's speakers but a) it might only be two-channel analog and b) why would you want to? I know some TVs that will allow you to use the built in speakers as your center channel (my current JVC has this option) but it won't be timbre matched and is unlikely to sound as good as a dedicated center speaker. And since you'll have to have the receiver on in order to get the sound to the TV, I'm not sure I see any other reason to do this.

Regards,

Joe

Thanks Joe.. I am not really sure what I was thinking... Its good to know I can get video up to the TV from and HDMi source. I guess I was just looking to get sound up to the TV from the receiver, while I piece together the speaker system.

Hi Chris - welcome to HTF! I hope you enjoy your stay.

Look into one of the Onkyo TX-SR505, 605 or 705 receivers. These units up-convert analog signals to output on the HDMI port. I do NOT know if it converts everything to feed the TV speakers with left/right analog - but check at your local store.

But - you normally do NOT send sound from the receiver to the TV. Usually the receiver strips off the sound because ... thats it's job.

When you look for a new TV - find one with as many HDMI inputs as possible - and that has an optical OUTPUT. With this - you feed everything straight to the TV and use the TV speakers for casual watching, but fire up the AV receiver for more serious 5.1 sound.

Hope this helps.
