    hey all -

suppose i'm connecting a dvd player to a receiver via hdmi only. does that mean i still have to connect the digital cable (whether optical or coax) to send the audio over?

i didn't think so ... since hdmi carries digital audio as well as video? or does it depend on the receiver or some other factor?

    thanks,

    ted

You got it. HDMI carries both, so you don't need another connection EXCEPT for SACD, which is NOT passed via HDMI at this time IIRC. So for SACD, you would need analog, firewire or one of the other proprietary connection types with compatible gear.
