I think I understand how to switch various HDMI signals from different
sources to go to TV from a receiver. However, I am confused about
the reverse process, i.e. if I am capturing a program off the air using
TV's digital tuner, how can I get the audio to play from speakers
connected to the receiver?

In my analog TV setup, I would do this by running cables from TV
audio output to an input on the receiver but not sure how to do this
for digital sound. Can the same HDMI cable that connects receiver
outut to TV be also used to send signals in the reverse direction
(based on some settings on the receiver)?

I have been unable to find any posts discussing this. Any help will be
most appreciated.

John.

No. You would need to run an HDMI cable from the HDMI output on your TV to an HDMI input on your receiver (assuming your TV has one.) Or you'd need to use a digital audio output (coax or optical) from the TV to the receiver. The TV can only output digital audio from its own tuner - these connections cannot be used as a pass-through for other sources, but they are designed for exactly what you're trying to do. Consult your owner's manual for details. (If you post the make and model number of your TV someone familiar with the model can probably give you detailed on the process - or the rest of us can find a PDF of the manual and try to help you out if you need it.)

Thanks Joe, I understand. I was trying to avoid having to run two wires through the wall as the TV will be wall mounted and the receiver some
distance away. The TV does not have an HDMI output, just a digital
audio output.
