I'm planning on buying an HDTV soon and in my research, I've come up with a couple of concerns about HDMI and audio.

I've read a lot of anecdotes about audio drop-out with HDMI. They range across brands and configurations. Is this as common a problem as it appears online?

In reading tech specs for various TVs, I've often seen this listed under the connection types: "Analog audio input (for HDMI)".

Why is this? HDMI transmits video and multi-channel sound. Why does it have a dedicated analog audio input on these TVs?

I'd guess that it's so that the folks that want to connect a DVI source (via the adapter) have a matching audio input.

A bump for this, as I'm still not clear on just how much of a concern this is and, thanks to a disappointing annual bonus (BOOOOO!), my search for an HDTV continues.
