I've never been what one would call an "audiophile," and when it comes to home theater, I am more familiar with the visual side of things. That said, I understand the basic differences between the various audio codecs and channel configurations used on DVD.

It's my understanding that both Dolby Digital and DTS have new formats that are used on HD-DVD and Blu-ray in addition to the "standard" DD and DTS formats. Would anyone be so kind as to give me a basic introduction to these new audio options? What do they offer, and how do they differ from the basic DD and DTS tracks found on DVD? Are they mandatory for the new formats? Are they supported by all existing players?

Any information is appreciated. Thanks!
