Seems like a very odd choice to shop the series for release elsewhere instead of on HBO Max. Not like they're cutting it to save $$$ or do another tax writeoff or something afterall... OR I suppose they might indeed terminating their side of the deal early enough to save some $$$... but at what other cost to their long term success though...
It makes sense in that the new ownership has made it clear that they combined streaming platform would not be targeting children's audiences, and this was a cartoon at least primarily for children.

What's a bit surprising given all of the hoopla about protecting and safeguarding the DC brand is that they'd allow arguably DC's most iconic character to go elsewhere in any form.

I don't see the upside to merging Discovery+ and HBOMax. Seems like their best bet would've been to mirror Disney+ which keeps ESPN (and Hulu) separate, figuring that there's likely a significantly different audience. Warner Discovery could've kept the two services separate, but (like Disney) offer a package deal if you want both.

I don’t think we can truly gauge whether or not it works until we see what the new service looks like.

But in terms of their reasoning, they’ve said that one of their big goals was to reduce subscriber churn and that their research has shown that HBO Max and Discovery+ attract two distinctly different audience segments (HBO skews heavily male with an emphasis on appointment viewing, Discovery skews heavily female with an emphasis on casual/background viewing) but that most households have a member of both demographics within them. They’re looking at the data and seeing that a lot of HBO Max viewers sign up for the new Westworld or Game of Thrones season, but not stay active year round, while Discovery subscribers tend to keep their subscriptions more active. Put them together, and they’re hoping for a scenario where maybe someone like me might have canceled after my show ended, but now I won’t because my wife is still watching Discovery content after my HBO show season has ended. Whether or not that works out for them is another question entirely, but I don’t think it’s a crazy premise. I also think there is some merit in saying that they don’t want their service to operate the same way Disney+ or Netflix do - makes sense to not try to make the exact same product your competitors are offering.

But what would they have to charge for the combined service to make sense (and actually be able to keep the needed number of subscribers more or less year-round) though?

Discovery+ alone right now only costs $7 for ad-free, and do most of their subscribers actually do that instead of the $5 ad-supported tier? I'm guessing (possibly very substantially) higher percentage of subscribers go for ad-supported for their kind of programming than that for "appointment viewing" programming.

Anyway, I'm guessing the Disney approach of bundled discount (that Apple also uses for their wider kinds of services) works better to appeal to subscribers, especially since WBD's expected approach (so far) would be a little bit like the tail wagging the dog since they'd be using the cheaper (probably lower value) aspect of the combined to incentivize/push sustained spending on the more expensive (should-be higher value) side... while needing to do all this cost cutting on scripted programming.

People who were satisfied to spend $5-7/month on Discovery+ plus $15 for 2-3 months a year probably aren't gonna be happy at all to essentially to be forced to add most of that $15/month to their bill while getting less than before -- not like HBO Max was ever that great to begin with. Can't imagine they could charge say $20/month (for ad-free) and actually keep happy customers year-round -- that would be 4x what people pay for ad-supported Discovery+ alone right now. And that's assuming they aren't really trying to increase subscribers for the Discovery+ side of the equation, which of course doesn't work for some like me, who doesn't already do Discovery+.

I just don't really see it working. I imagine lots of people will feel like they're being forced to keep a much more expensive service year-round (that offers less of what they previously did separately). Certainly, for families like mine, it won't stop us from just activating for 2-3 months a year (unless there's a great promo deal like recently/now) -- in fact, I might be inclined to do 1 fewer month per year if the price is higher than the old $15 for ad-free HBO Max. And I don't see them cutting costs enough to drop the combined service to something palatable enough to keep me year-round -- I'd probably need the ad-free price drop down to <=$10/month, maybe less.

Sure, they'll cut some more long term operating costs due to combining into one platform, but creating/developing one platform that works well to cover both types of programming isn't free nor instantaneous (nor guaranteed to be more profitable). It could all backfire on them (to whatever extent). Can/would they be able to recycle the vast majority of either currently existing platform w/ some (minor enough) mods/enhancements to work well for the new combined? That would probably help a lot if so, but I have serious doubts...

There are a lot of valid questions there but I don’t think we can really speculate on what the answers will be until the new service is unveiled next summer. Anything else would be guessing for guessing’s sake.

However, looking at the first steps they’ve taken thus far, they’re already announced that future HBO Max original movies are going to be budgeted at no more than $35 million each, while the previous regime was spending closer to $70-100 million on original movies. They’re axing expensive original shows like Raised By Wolves which cost fortunes and neither brought in big audiences nor drove pop cultural discourse. One can look at all of that and surmise that bringing the overhead costs down will provide more flexibility towards price points more in line with what audiences want to pay.

But it sure seems that there’s a large segment of the clickbait generating industry that isn’t interested in giving the new ownership an opportunity to try their strategy and simply wants to promote outrage and panic. When the former owner was spending fortunes on HBO Max, these clickbaiters screamed about how they were destroying the entire theatrical industry. When the new owner says they’re gonna pivot towards prioritizing theatrical, those same prognosticators then screamed they were ruining streaming. I’m just starting to wonder what’s the point in paying attention or reacting to any of that noise if it’s going to be negative no matter what they do.

For what it’s worth, I think there is a lot of potential for this to surprise us with how well it could work, while obviously the opposite is also true. But I think a lot of the underlying marketplace assumptions that Discovery is basing their decision making are true. They believe the marketplace is oversaturated with more content than can be profitable simultaneously. I think that’s true. They believe that there is subscription fatigue among consumers trying to juggle too many services. I think that’s probably true as well. They believe (and their prior attempts to launch niche services as well as the numbers for CNN+ that they saw before pulling the plug justify that belief) that there aren’t enough subscribers or interest for niche services to come close to being profitable on their own. I believe that’s absolutely correct.

They do believe that a service that appeals to different members of a household for different reasons, that has a mixture of appointment viewing premium original content, lower cost everyday casual viewing content, and first rate theatrical films that are broadly recognized and already popular thanks to exclusive theatrical runs is the formula that will work for them.

I think Discovery+ being folded into HBOmax should be compared to the NatGeo material on Disney+.

This is the latest in a long, proud tradition of John Oliver taking digs at his corporate overlords, but I still found it funny:
HBO Max: It's not TV. It's a series of tax write-offs to appease Wall Street.

Bye Bye Bunny, the Looney Tunes musical that was being shopped to other streamers, has apparently been cancelled and its animators laid off. Still no word on the fate of Batman: Caped Crusader.

Even though I was paying pretty close attention to the news back when this was happening, that was a very long time ago. Anyway, I still learned quite a few details about this that I didn't know from this epic documentary that just dropped on hbomax.

Wonder why AT&T and former WarnerMedia heads aren't also defendants since they're actually the ones who "cooked [the]... numbers"... or are they also being sued separately instead?

Wonder how this might affect a possible merger with Comcast in 2024 or 2025? Those rumors are out there even though this merger is recent

There’s never been a directors cut of this film before - I assume that’s a typo from HBO but man that would be cool if there was an alternate version of the film to check out.
