Tivo Stream 4K may be a less expensive alternative at $50.

No AppleTV app (for all my iTunes purchases) though, right? Plus I'm reading Google started pushing too much ads (of late) onto the home screen (at the expensive of quick/easy accessibility to your own choice of apps)?

Not too crazy about adding Google appliances to my house at this point anyway -- they track my family plenty enough via regular web access as is. I still have a Google Home device I received free a couple years ago that I never bothered to install.

I'd probably only subscribe to HBO Max for a month or two each year -- and anything all that exclusive to HBO could still be accessed thru the regular HBO app on Roku anyway.

If you have a firestick it’s really easy to Legally add it to those.

It will be interesting to see if movies like "The Thin Man", They Were Expendable" and "Tin Cup" are derived from the new masters used for the WA Blu-rays or will they be derived from the older masters used for the iTunes streams?

Mister Roberts, 1955

If this is a new master (and a sign of a possible new WAC BD), that would be a wonderful surprise. The SD version that I saw on iTunes was unusually difficult to get through visually and I so want to give it another try. It seemed like a movie I’d love.

Considering everything else that has premiered on the service has been from the new WAC masters (Million Dollar Mermaid, Flying Leathernecks, Romance on the High Seas, Strike up the Band, Sunrise at Campobello) I can’t imagine that they wouldn’t use the new masters for those as well. You’ll remember the WAC podcast blamed the retailers for not updating their files. I think there is just a disconnect somewhere between Warner Archive and the digital retailers. HBOMax is directly connected to the source so there is no problem there.

You would think so, but you never know with these streaming services.:)

And by the way, those new Warner Archive releases that just debuted on HBOMax a few months ago are already gone! Is HBOMax cycling out Warner-owned material that fast? I thought it was supposed to be like Netflix and Disney+ and carry stuff for long periods of time. It’s more like a cable channel where the lineup is only good for the month.

All those great classics cycled out....it must be sequel month. Lots of Critters..Lethal Weapons....Ninja Turtles..Matrix's. ugh..feels like a major step down.
I am looking forward to see how Mister Roberts looks though.

With it being October, we should expect some horror and kid movies would show up. Which great classics are cycling out?

Mr. Roberts is a bonafide classic and one of my favorites of all time.

This Monday marks the anniversary of the passing of my wife’s dad, who served in the navy during the Korean war. Mr. Roberts is his favorite film. It has become a tradition to watch it yearly to honor him and I’ve already pulled out the DVD which at least looks better than the SD stream on iTunes. Hopefully a BD is finally coming soon.

Usually there are more great classic movies cycling in; hopeful for November.
Well, perhaps your "classic movies" expectations are different than what some of us expect from HBO Max as I see at least a dozen great classic movies coming in October. Other people might have some other titles they want to add to my listing below. This streaming service isn't just for classic movie buffs as they are trying to appeal to a larger base of subscribers.

  1. Ball of Fire, 1941
  2. Bombshell, 1933
  3. The Informer, 1935
  4. Libeled Lady, 1936
  5. Miracle of Morgan’s Creek, 1944
  6. Mister Roberts, 1955
  7. Mutiny on the Bounty, 1935
  8. Nothing Sacred, 1937
  9. Sands of Iwo Jima, 1950
  10. They Were Expendable, 1945
  11. The Thin Man, 1934
  12. The Wings of Eagles, 1957

You're right. Owning 4,000 films on iTunes and having 1000s of blu rays that I have purchased in the US and all over Europe, I'm spoiled; but I'm always looking for those films that are still unavailable or not upgraded to HD.

I said nothing about you being spoiled. I don't think HBO Max's business model is focused on just classic movies. IMO, they're trying to attract a wide range of subscribers. It's a given that some of those subscribers are complaining that there are too many classic movies on HBO Max.
